Tips to Stack Firewood Safely Indoors During Winter
Bringing in the firewood is a cozy tradition, whether you’re having friends and family over for a campfire in the summer, or gathering by the fire stove on a brisk winter evening. Many of us just pile it up, or neatly stack it in a symmetrical structure to optimize our storage space. But the way that you stack it can actually make a huge impact on the safety, air flow, and keeping pests at bay.
Here’s how to store and stack your firewood indoors so you’re always ready to toss a log on the fire.
1. Pick the Right Spot
- Choose a location that’s:
Dry and well-ventilated. Moisture is your firewood’s worst enemy. Even kiln-dried wood can reabsorb water if stacked in a damp basement corner. - Away from direct heat. Don’t stack right next to your wood stove or furnace. It’s a fire hazard.
2. Elevate Your Stack
Keep your wood off the floor to protect it from ground moisture. Use a small rack or even a simple pallet. This promotes airflow underneath and reduces mold risk.
3. Keep the Stack Tight But Not Tall
Stack your firewood securely so it doesn’t topple over, especially if you have kids or pets.
- Limit indoor stacks to about 4 feet high.
- A stable, crisscross end helps keep everything tight.
4. Bring in Smaller Amounts at a Time
Even seasoned firewood can harbor insects. Bringing in only what you’ll burn over a few days limits the chance of bugs finding a new home inside.
